Stories - Chp. 1'Go on then' her mum encouraged. 'You don't want to be late'.
'Alright then' Kirsten murmured. Opening the door, she scrambled out the car and shut the door a loud bang.
'Gently!' her mother scolded through her open window. Kirsten bit her lip and nodded, walking to the gate and up the garden path. She came to a stop at the thick wooden door, decorated with a frosted glass window, and jumped to press the door bell.
For a moment, there was no sign of life from behind the white curtains. Then a jack russell burst through them, paws landing on the windowsill as it started barking. Kirsten backed away from the glass, able to hear a rough rumble in the dog's throat through the double paned glass.
The dog jumped away from the window, the noise soon appearing again at the door as footsteps echoed off a wooden floor. She inhaled a little, glancing back at the car for a moment. Her mum waved her hand cheerfully. Kirsten looked back to the door, staring up at the silhouette behind the frosted gl
The Wrong FaceThe Wrong Face
The congratulatory smile painted on Sarah's face faded as she watched the argument. The company had been anticipating it for weeks. Muri had made it clear he wouldn't stand quietly in the wings anymore.
'Well Muri, that's a matter of personal opinion' the Director responded. 'But, you're not right for the role. Hamlet well…well he's from Denmark and…'
          'That's racist!'
'It's the demands of the script, Muri. And there's other factors. Hamlet's a grown man and you, well, you're…' he trailed off. Muri stiffened for a moment, then strode across the room and slammed the door behind him. The bang compressed everyone to their seat.
Sarah moved first, lifting her handbag and Muri's jacket before stepping softly across the

The King, the Queen and the Fool - ProloguePrologue
'Then what is it?'
'It's just that she is so very... young, sir.' Andrew struggled for words.
'She is a pretty girl. They grow up into beautiful women.'
'You would hardly want her Royal Highness marrying a man she's met once at the age of fourteen.'
'Captain!' James' voice had a lash that made all men hold their tongue. The monarch observed the young man in front of him, letting the silence stand. He flinched involuntarily as his eyes fell on the healing wound cutting through the soldier's right eyebrow, falling down the bridge of his nose and lightly touching his cheek. It spoiled what could have been considered a handsome face.
Andrew recognised the reaction and turned his head slightly.
'That,' James continued, pointing at the soldier's face 'Is a very potent reminder of why we are even having this discussion. Your actions that day have made you an idol for those who protest against us. The common man who won the war.'
'I never asked to be any idol, sir, and I did no
Mucking OutMucking Out
During the summer you're supposed to stop mucking out. The wheelbarrow gets taken to the hose and washed down, removing the inevitable thick brown sludge that has hardened to a crust, to show the sky blue underneath. It slots into place against the wall, and lays there to grow dust and cobwebs until the third day of November, when it will be needed again.
My wheelbarrow has never been clean for long. It is June, exams are over, and it is hot. One of those blissful days when the sun shines down on the tarmac and dries the mud, which dusts about all over the yard and coats your bare arms in a fine layer of dirt. People around me smile and laugh; the little girls are out on their ponies. We all slave through the bitter winter for these few pleasant months when the horses live in the fields at night, and we can enjoy having time to ride.
My wheelbarrow sits by the stable door, propping it open so the sunlight can stream in and bounce off the white painted walls. A bee fl
